The Effects of Age Discrimination on Health-Promoting Behaviors among Older Adults Living in Metropolitan Areas: The Mediating Effect of Self-esteem
Kim Su-Jee

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between age discrimination and health-promoting behaviors among older adults living in metropolitan areas. Utilizing the 2019 survey data collected by the Aged Society and Social Capital Research Center at Seoul National University, we analyzed 500 older adults' ratings on the questionnaires of age discrimination, self-esteem and health promoting behaviors, and the effect of self-esteem was examined using multi-mediation regression analysis. Older adults were found to be engaged in various types of health-promoting behaviors, primarily focused on diet, regular exercise, and medical treatment, and experience age discrimination in various aspects of their daily life. Older adults who experienced higher levels of age discrimination tended to have lower levels of health-promoting behaviors and self-esteem. Finally, the mediating effect of self-esteem in the relationship between age discrimination and health-promoting behaviors was confirmed. These results suggest that public understanding of age discrimination should be improved in order to protect older adults' self-esteem and encourage their participation in health-promoting behaviors.
